Midnight at the Magnolia

Hello, Internet! We're back for another season of holiday rom-com goodness! We've been busy watching movies and coming up with great recommendations so get your couch cushions and popcorn ready! First up this year for me (Sarah) is Midnight at the Magnolia. This is more New Year and less Christmas but it's all in the holiday season, right? I love a good friends-to-lovers troupe and this is a pretty good one even if it is a little transparent from the start. Jack and Maggie have been friends for as long as they can remember. From playing together as kids to starting their own radio show in high school they are thick as thieves. Now they host a popular, banter-filled radio show in their hometown that's garnered national attention and is about to be syndicated. In order to seal the deal with satellite radio they agree to introduce their respective significant others to their supposedly crazy intense families on air. Things quickly go south when they both end up single- ga...

A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish

Have you ever wondered how many movies there are that are called "A Cinderella Story"? I (Katy) have. I tried searching imdb.com to get an exact number, but after sixty seconds of searching, I gave up. There were at least 7. I think I've mentioned before that I'm not a huge fan of Cinderella. I guess the whole story just bums me out. Abuse is not awesome. But I found this gem on Netflix and decided to give it a whirl. I am so angry. It's rare that a movie makes me angry because it's so bad, but this has moved to the top of the list. it's also rare for me to hate a movie at all, because I genuinely love terrible movie (I'm looking at you every Hallmark movie ever made). I didn't watch the preview for this one because they generally reveal the entire plot, including the end, so I was completely unprepared for the MUSICAL NUMBERS! And oh man, were they awful. I don't begrudge a movie for inserting musical numbers. I ordinarily love them. I h...

Let it Snow

A lot of people have already watched this one and the general consensus is that it's pretty good. I was skeptical and put off watching it for a couple weeks but as soon as I heard the narrator's voice I thought, I can get on board with this. Joan Cusack has a way of doing that to a person. I've heard a few people compare this to  Love Actually  in that it has many storylines running simultaneously and you don't know how they connect until the end. I haven't seen  Love Actually  but from what I know I would say this is the high school equivelent of it.  Source It's tempting in the holiday rom-com genre to thrown in riduculous situations or unintentionally create gaping plot holes because you're trying to fill 90 minutes with a story that should be told in 15. One of the great things about the format in Let it Snow is that you don't get bored with any of the characters or story lines. They did a great job grabbing your attention from the s...

The Knight Before Christmas

When I logged into Netflix this morning I was planning to watch another episode of the Great British Baking Show. However, the preview playing at the top of the menu caught my eye and my morning viewing plans were immediately derailed. My thoughts went something like this: Another Vanessa Hudgens Christmas movie? Oh, this is going to be terrible, I can't wait! (remember The Princess Switch from last year??) Who is the male lead in this? Oh, is that Hugh Armitage from Poldark?? Does this include time travel? Where is the play button, I need to see this right NOW! Source My thoughts after the first few minutes: Vanessa Hudgens perpetually looks like she's 13, even when she's a highschool teacher. I do like her sweater though, where can I buy that? Also, Josh Whitehouse is a dreamboat! So, our story begins in Norwich, England December 18, 1334 with Sir Cole Christopher Lyons of Norwich heading out on a hunt with the other knights from his castle. We also ...

Holiday in the Wild

I know it's only the first week of November. I know that Halloween was just days ago and there are many weeks until Christmas. I am usually stubborn about waiting until after Thanksgiving to start in on the Christmas season. But I just got too excited to start my Christmas rom com movies this year. I have a few on my Netflix watchlist that will be coming out later this month but the first one I saw previews for this year was Holiday in the Wild . I was intrigued immediately. It has two very big names attached- Rob Lowe and Kristin Davis- both of whom are more seasond actors than your typical leads in this genre. I was, of course, expecting it to be cheesy and predictable, one of those movies you love to hate. Man! Did this one surprise me! It starts out as these usually do- New York City, husband/significant other who is a jerk, life crisis forces main character out of her usual habitat, ruggedly handsome fellow comes to her aid. But what I wasn't expecting was the addi...

A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding

This movie had little chance of being any good right from the get go. First of all, it's a sequel and those are never as good as the original. And this one's original was truly awful. There were so many ways that they had so suspend reality that even with my love for movies like this, I just could NOT believe it. I have heard from multiple people that this may be the most difficult movie they've ever tried to watch. One woman told me she turned it off and she LOVES these holiday specials. Katy, this blog's co-creator, took 4 days to make it through and described it as a "harrowing experience". Our sequel begins it's barrage of reality suspensions literally from the very first moment. 1. Amber lives alone in her tiny New York apartment. I am pretty sure that the moment she became engaged to the Prince she would have a slew of security around her at all times. She may even relocate to the country she will be Queen of one day. Maybe? 2. She flie...

How Sarah Got Her Wings

How Sarah Got Her Wings  follows the story of a woman who is seemingly the salt of the earth. She's involved in her church, she's a caring real estate agent and she even risks her life to look for a homeless man's dog. Unfortunately, this last good dead proves fateful and she's hit by a bus. Think Regina George in Mean Girls  except Sarah really dies in this instance. She wakes up in "The Lobby" where she must find herself on the list to enter the pearly gates to heaven. Much to her dismay (and as you may have guessed by now) she is not on said list. She banters with one of the snarkiest -and most inappropriate- arch angels you'll ever meet and is eventually told she must return to earth for the 12 days leading up to Christmas to find out how to get on the list and into heaven. She shows up in her ex-boyfriend Jordan's apartment and this is where things begin to not make much sense. But Jordan is shirtless for a solid 5 minutes so I am will...
