Midnight at the Magnolia

Hello, Internet! We're back for another season of holiday rom-com goodness! We've been busy watching movies and coming up with great recommendations so get your couch cushions and popcorn ready!

First up this year for me (Sarah) is Midnight at the Magnolia. This is more New Year and less Christmas but it's all in the holiday season, right? I love a good friends-to-lovers troupe and this is a pretty good one even if it is a little transparent from the start. Jack and Maggie have been friends for as long as they can remember. From playing together as kids to starting their own radio show in high school they are thick as thieves. Now they host a popular, banter-filled radio show in their hometown that's garnered national attention and is about to be syndicated. In order to seal the deal with satellite radio they agree to introduce their respective significant others to their supposedly crazy intense families on air. Things quickly go south when they both end up single- gasp!

To add to the drama, their dads own a jazz club - The Magnolia- together which has seen better days. People just aren't listening to jazz like they used to *shakes fist like an old man*. In an effort to save their careers and the jazz club they hatch a plan to pretend they are dating and host a big New Year's Eve party at The Magnolia where they'll make a splash on national radio by announcing they're together. You can see where this is going, right? Their fake feelings soon become mixed up with real ones and things get complicated. Will they be able so save their careers? Will The Magnolia have to close? You'll have to watch and see for yourself!

My one gripe with this move is that they say each of their families are too crazy to introduce anyone to. Now, I get that that is just an excuse for not really liking the person they're with but their families do not seem crazy to me at all. They enjoy a number of cozy meals together at The Magnolia and not once did I see someone start a bonfire big enough that people call the fire department. Nobody get's injured in a violent game of continental rummy. Nobody's grandma is starting a water fight in the middle of a family party or telling slightly off color jokes. I thought Jack and Maggie's families were positively normal from my point of view. A bit overbearing at times, perhaps, but crazy? Not at all. Anyone else have a family that is truly insane? Just me? *crickets*

Whatever the case, this is a great movie to add to your list this year. It feels cozy and familiar and I even laughed right out loud at one point so I'd say that's pretty good sign you'll like it too.

Midnight at the Magnolia is available to stream on Netflix.

Falling for Christmas

After a not-so-brief hiatus, I'M (Katy) BACK! And who better to welcome us back than our drama queen, Lindsay Lohan? Released a year ago (when I watched it and then immediately forgot every single thing about it), this movie was Miss Lohan's first movie back after an also 3 year hiatus, so it felt fitting. Join me on this journey that Netflix describes as, " Overboad meets The Princess Switch",  where we'll hopefully get answers to questions such as: Will they find the true spirit of Christmas? Will anyone kiss under the mistletoe? Will they get their Christmas miracle and save the lodge? And why is that little girl constantly smiling? This movie opens with what I imagine are real live scenes from Lindsay Lohan's actual life. If she's not starting every morning off being served caviar and champagne I don't even know what she's doing with her life. Lindsay (henceforth know interchangeably as Sierra and Sarah) is the daughter of an extremely wealth

Hot Frosty

Hot Frosty. Y'all, take a deep breath and understand that this movie is called HOT. FROSTY. Someone said, "Frosty, but make him sexy." And Netflix said, "Yes, please!" If not for the casting, I (Katy) probably would have skipped this one altogether. Fans of Schitt's Creek will recognize Dr. Ted Mullens (real name Dustin Milligan) as our titular Frosty. Our leading lady is played by the heir to the Toaster Strudel empire herself, Lacey Chabert. Lauren Holly, who many of my fellow millennials will know from Dumb & Dumber, is one of the top billed actors, but I don't remember seeing her face even one time, and I watched this twice for some inexplicable reason. To truly enjoy this movie, you have to suspend all reality. The people in this movie do not live in the same world where you and I live. If you're looking for logic, reason, or really any kind of sanity at all, this movie is not for you. You will leave this movie with more questions than ans

The Knight Before Christmas

When I logged into Netflix this morning I was planning to watch another episode of the Great British Baking Show. However, the preview playing at the top of the menu caught my eye and my morning viewing plans were immediately derailed. My thoughts went something like this: Another Vanessa Hudgens Christmas movie? Oh, this is going to be terrible, I can't wait! (remember The Princess Switch from last year??) Who is the male lead in this? Oh, is that Hugh Armitage from Poldark?? Does this include time travel? Where is the play button, I need to see this right NOW! Source My thoughts after the first few minutes: Vanessa Hudgens perpetually looks like she's 13, even when she's a highschool teacher. I do like her sweater though, where can I buy that? Also, Josh Whitehouse is a dreamboat! So, our story begins in Norwich, England December 18, 1334 with Sir Cole Christopher Lyons of Norwich heading out on a hunt with the other knights from his castle. We also
