The Knight Before Christmas

When I logged into Netflix this morning I was planning to watch another episode of the Great British Baking Show. However, the preview playing at the top of the menu caught my eye and my morning viewing plans were immediately derailed. My thoughts went something like this:

Another Vanessa Hudgens Christmas movie?
Oh, this is going to be terrible, I can't wait! (remember The Princess Switch from last year??)
Who is the male lead in this? Oh, is that Hugh Armitage from Poldark??
Does this include time travel?
Where is the play button, I need to see this right NOW!

Vanessa Hudgens and Josh Whitehouse in The Knight Before Christmas (2019)

My thoughts after the first few minutes: Vanessa Hudgens perpetually looks like she's 13, even when she's a highschool teacher. I do like her sweater though, where can I buy that? Also, Josh Whitehouse is a dreamboat!

So, our story begins in Norwich, England December 18, 1334 with Sir Cole Christopher Lyons of Norwich heading out on a hunt with the other knights from his castle. We also begin in Bracebridge, Ohio 2019 with Brooke Winters, a pep-talking school teacher. I can already tell this is going to be AMAZING!

While riding his valiant steed thorugh the frozen forest, Sir Cole runs into an old chrone and in return for his kindness towards her she gives him an amulet with a promise that he will have an opportunity to "fulfill his destiny". He is immediately transported to present day Bracebridge, right to the middle of a Christmas carnival. The chrone has also time traveled and temporarily morphed into Mrs. Clause. She wanders around the carnival giving everyone mysterious looks (and possibly casting a spell?) before dissappearing. I'm already slightly confused so let's move on.

Brooke and Sir Cole literally bump into each other at the carnival and stars fill thier eyes. Later in the evening, during a blizzard, Brooke nearly hits Cole with her car. After a trip to the hospital and a diagnosis of temporary amnesia due to head trauma, she decides  to take him home with her until his memory comes back. He doesn't actually have memory loss, the time travel has just left him completely perplexed by modern life. Everything from the radio to the refridgerator to tater tots make his eyes bug out of his head.

One of the best parts of this show is when he turns on the "captivating picture box" (the TV) and all the movies playing are other Netflix Christmas movies! He's watching Holiday in the Wild and Holiday Calendar! He also argues with the Amazon Alexa and picks up a modern dialect from the television and it's kind of hilarious.

Brooke and Cole decorate for Christmas while she tells us about how her parents passed away and he shares his thoughts on the possibility of time travel. Cole, dressed in her douche of an ex-boyfriend's clothes, chops down a tree in one swoop and practices sword fighting on the Christmas lawn decorations. Brooke lets Cole drive her car as he goes searching for the old chrone/Mrs. Clause. Somehow he is a master bread maker and he rescues Brooke's niece Claire from a frozen lake. Add in a charity Christmas Eve Feast and Josh Whitehouse singing part of the soundtrack and there are just so many strange things going on. But isn't that what is so great about these shows?

Despite all the projects they work on together Cole continues to dispair as he tries to find out what his quest is so that he can become a true knight and return home. He knows it has something to do with opening his heart but just can't seem to figure out what that could possibly mean. *eye roll emoji*

I don't want to give away too much of the movie but can you sort of see where things are going, right?

In the end, my main takeaway is that I want to see more of Vanessa Hudgens every Christmas, she seems to have found her genre and I am here for it! Also, I want Brooke's entire wardrobe from this movie. Give The Knight Before Christmas a watch and let me know what you think!

Available to stream on Netflix.

  1. I thought it was cute, and certainly had a good theme about the importance of being a good person. I wish they'd gone into a little more depth, especially with the knight. He seemed to immediately know how important this quest was, even though he had no idea what he was questing for. Some background info about a search for meaning, etc, would've been cool. But maybe that's above and beyond what's expected for this genre, haha.

Falling for Christmas

After a not-so-brief hiatus, I'M (Katy) BACK! And who better to welcome us back than our drama queen, Lindsay Lohan? Released a year ago (when I watched it and then immediately forgot every single thing about it), this movie was Miss Lohan's first movie back after an also 3 year hiatus, so it felt fitting. Join me on this journey that Netflix describes as, " Overboad meets The Princess Switch",  where we'll hopefully get answers to questions such as: Will they find the true spirit of Christmas? Will anyone kiss under the mistletoe? Will they get their Christmas miracle and save the lodge? And why is that little girl constantly smiling? This movie opens with what I imagine are real live scenes from Lindsay Lohan's actual life. If she's not starting every morning off being served caviar and champagne I don't even know what she's doing with her life. Lindsay (henceforth know interchangeably as Sierra and Sarah) is the daughter of an extremely wealth

Hot Frosty

Hot Frosty. Y'all, take a deep breath and understand that this movie is called HOT. FROSTY. Someone said, "Frosty, but make him sexy." And Netflix said, "Yes, please!" If not for the casting, I (Katy) probably would have skipped this one altogether. Fans of Schitt's Creek will recognize Dr. Ted Mullens (real name Dustin Milligan) as our titular Frosty. Our leading lady is played by the heir to the Toaster Strudel empire herself, Lacey Chabert. Lauren Holly, who many of my fellow millennials will know from Dumb & Dumber, is one of the top billed actors, but I don't remember seeing her face even one time, and I watched this twice for some inexplicable reason. To truly enjoy this movie, you have to suspend all reality. The people in this movie do not live in the same world where you and I live. If you're looking for logic, reason, or really any kind of sanity at all, this movie is not for you. You will leave this movie with more questions than ans
